Allocating only a portion of a portfolio that one could genuinely afford to lose entirely to any individual protocol limits the damage from a worst-case scenario. Hardware wallets and non-custodial storage remain essential for assets not actively deployed in protocols. Approval management — regularly reviewing and revoking token approvals granted to smart contracts — limits the attack surface available to exploits targeting connected wallets. Finally, maintaining a realistic psychological posture toward DeFi yields is perhaps the most underrated form of risk management. Investors who approach extraordinary yield claims with proportionate skepticism are better positioned to avoid the most damaging outcomes.
Decentralized finance represents a genuine technological development with real potential applications. But that potential does not immunize it from the fundamental dynamics of risk and reward.
